Today Jason woke me up from my nap and asked what we were having for dinner. I said probably meatloaf (I know, gag a little bit, but meh, it fills you up.)
He asked if we could have something else and then left to take someone to the airport.
So, being the nice wife I am, I started to make something else. Spaghetti - woohoo, right? Well, it's Jason's favorite. So, I'm getting it going and realize we're out of spaghetti noodles. Hmmm... I pull a "mom" trick and decide to use the pene pasta that we have, it'll work. Well, when the water was boiling, I lift the bag off the stove to pour it into the water. Too bad the burner it was sitting on was a little warm, and I got this:
Because I didn't want to burn myself I let them go and turned dinner into hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes. (Again gag some more, but it's food and I really didn't care.)
So, Jason calls and asks what we're having because he's starving and he'll eat anything. I let him know that that would have been nice to know an hour ago when I was going to make meatloaf. He asked me if I wanted him to pick something up. I hung up.
The water/milk/butter for the potato flakes boiled over and I almost swore. Thank heavens for a flat top stove.
So, long story short:
*I need ideas for dinner so I'm not scrambling at the last minute. Let me have your ideas!
*The cannery potato flakes get a "C," they work, but aren't as good as the pearls. I think I'll go ahead and get the pearls in bulk. Anyone want to share?
*We accept invites for Sunday dinner.

Sara! I hate those days! Did you cry? I hate spending so much time on dinner and nothing works and then it taste gross and my kids won't eat it and I can see Jake choking it down through my tears building up in my eyes. And then you have to clean it all up at the end! Hate it! Hate it! I don't know if I have any good advice or ideas, I have a few recipes I have been meaning to post on my blog that are pretty good and easy, so I'll do that. We should all live by eachother someday and cook and eat together! I miss AZ.

My favorite website is www.allrecipes.com. You can type in what ingredients you have and it will tell you what you can make with it. I just made peach chicken last night. It was actually pretty good. Also, I go to this blog and check out the new recipes on it: grandmassyrup.blogspot.com.
I agree cooking dinner stinks and on the weekends forget about it! I am feeling in a rut too so no help on that one. But I totally agree we should get another bridal shower every ten years, all of my stuff is breaking and I am sick of looking at everything I once loved.
ok can i just say i would have hung up the phone too and cussed out loud. i hate when crap like that happens especially when you are trying to be a good wife. argh.
I just laughed when I saw your pics and heard your story...why is this an all too familiar situation for us mom's. Don't we have to put up with enough crud let alone a melted ziploc bag and hamburger gravy on fake mashed potatoes (had too many times to count)! I wish cooking could be like on cooking shows--all premeasured and clean...wouldn't it be nice!?
You know you're ALWAYS invited to our house on Sunday's but it is usually something that some (of the boys, and we won't name them) don't like and it is later than you want to eat. I do have to say that you pulled a pretty good "mom" trick by changing the menu four times while making it. I'm so proud of you.
So do you have your camera connected to your hip or what? The best was when I was making dinner for 6 and was draing a ton of ground been into the sink, and the thought came to me "that would be crazy if I didn't hold this lid on tight enough" Next thing I know, half the meat falls into the sink. I was freaking out because a church dinner group was coming over in ten minutes. Brett helped me rinse the meat really fast. Ten second rule, right? Don't you want to come over for dinner now? I have actually been totally into cooking lately so I'll email you some recipes that I love.
Sara, host a Pampered Chef show, and then get the pots & pans. They are amazing and worth every penny. Plus, they have a lifetime warranty. You deserve them. Every woman deserves them.
What is your email? I am going to send you some recipes. Sorry about the disaster. But thanks for making me lose my appetite for the day. :)
Sara,
I was laughing so hard looking at the dinner scene, and then the milk in the cupboard made me laugh even harder! That is exactly the way I feel sometimes!
I try to remind myself that there is nothing wrong with sandwiches or soup for dinner at least once a week!

i feel your pain"!!!! i hate thinking up the plan...if the plan is done i can execute anything! i'm really bad at it when i have a baby! i wish now i would have captured that pie i flung on the floor because my wonderful son left the cabinet door open. i totally cried on that one. i had made it from scratcharoo and for someone else. it was one of those times that i know i would laugh at later..i think i might write a book about those times!!!
I'm with everyone else. And I'm pretty sure anytime I ask Devin what he wants for dinner his answer is I dunno. Thinking it up is the hardest part so why is it up to us? Amanda taught me this really good trick where anytime they have vegetables for dinner that not everyone eats she just keeps them in a bag in the freezer like left over corn or green beans etc and then when she has a whole bag or wants an easy dinner she does vegetable beef stew with them.
